Switches that respond when they sense movement are called motion sensor light switches. Motion sensors used to be popular in alarm systems only. However, this technology has been recently fitted to light switches, adding more pizzazz to how we turn our lights on or off.
Motion sensor light switches out in the market today come in three different variants:
- Pyroelectric Infrafred Sensors (PIR): they work by identifying body heat and activate whenever this heat is detected.
- Ultrasonic Sensors: these sensors emit pulses and analyze the how these pulses reflect from objects.
- Microwave Sensors: these sensors emit microwave pulses and analyze how these pulses bounce off from objects.
Most motion sensor light switches contain a combination of two of the technologies mentioned about in order for them to work very efficiently.
Motion sensor switches in every single room in the house does not only make things convenient for the household, they also save a lot of energy. These switches turn lights off whenever nobody is in the room and this makes them a priority for anybody looking to contribute to the cause of a greener planet!
These switches may look expensive but they actually come cheap. For $25 only, you can get screw-in motion sensor switches made for 25-100 watts bulbs. Installation is so easy and you need not hire anybody to install them for you.
For installation, first remove your bulb. Screw in your motion sensor switches in place and replace your bulb. That’s all it takes. To try them out, try leaving the room and your lights should automatically go off after a few minutes. Remember that these switches work best in enclosed spaces such as your bedroom or basement so they may not work outside of your house.
These motion sensors measure 4” in length and 3” in diameter and can cover a full 360° radius. To activate them, simply walk in or out the room; that’s how easy they make things for you!
Perhaps the only limitation these screw-in motion sensor switches have is that they are only compatible bare light sockets designed for light bulbs mounted on the ceiling. They do not work with CFLs or compact fluorescent bulbs.
