Car battery prices and what to do about corrosion

On February 10, 2011, in Automotive, Mechanical, by GuestPoster

This article is all about saving money, but not in the way you would expect. You may be thinking what do car battery prices have to do with corrosion, well in your mind quite a lot. The thing is, whenever we ask for the price of something we are actually trying to gauge whether or not we are getting a good deal, unfortunately the price of a car battery doesn’t tell us anything except that our cars are very demanding. We can’t save money on car batteries by cost cutting because most of the time we have no choice over what we buy, but we can make them last longer which will save us money in the long run.

Need a new car battery? You’ll need to be prepared to pay between $40 and $120 for one; if you’re lucky you might be able to get a way with just paying $40. The cost of a car battery is derived from many things including the length of warranty it has, the CCA rate and the group size, often times the large the group size the more money you’ll have to pay, but this is determined by our vehicle and not by us so we don’t have much say in the matter.

If you want to save money then you need to keep your battery running a lot longer than it should do, many people waste money by replacing their cars battery at the first sign of trouble. If your cars battery isn’t working properly then it could be because of corrosion, if there are rusty deposits around the terminals and connectors then there’s a good chance this is impeding the flow of electricity to the engine. Remove this corrosive residue using a wire brush and a solution of baking soda and warm water; apply petroleum jelly to the affected areas afterwards to prevent this from happening again.

What is the best synthetic oil on the market?

On January 10, 2011, in Automotive, Mechanical, by GuestPoster

When it’s time to replace your engine oil you naturally want to use the best product for your car. Oil is so critical is would be silly to use a cheap product that could not protect as well as a better but more expensive one. The trouble is there’s no easy answer to the question of what is the best synthetic motor oil. It all depends on your car and they type of driving you do.

However, for the most part we do not need to get too hung up on technical specifications and performance data, not unless we are a real petrol head. The main thing to ensure is that the oil you choose is of the correct grade for your vehicle. This will be specified in the owners handbook and will look something like 5W 35. The numbers will vary but the format will be the same. This is multi-grade synthetic oil that works well at a range of temperatures.

The next thing to ensure is the oil is approved by the American Petroleum Institute (or in Europe by the Society of Automotive Engineers). The API and SAE stamp ensures the oil meets government standards and is a badge you can rely on.

If you’re changing the oil yourself remember to recycle the waste oil correctly. Oil is extremely toxic and gets more so with prolonged use as it absorbs poisonous chemicals created by the combustion process.

You can even use a tool called and oil filter cutter to remove waste oil from the oil filter. If a garage is changing your oil they will have a ‘grown up’ pneumatic version of this gadget called an oil filter crusher to remove the oil and compact the filter for metal recycling. You could always ask the garage if they will dispose of your filter for you.
